But, with more than 75 years of shipping records in the Gibson books, and dozens of variations on numerical schemes used over the years, serial numbers sometimes do little to shed light on the origin of a mysterious Gibson. With vintage Gibsons selling at auction for as much as half a million dollars, Davidson will sometimes roll up his sleeves and poke around in the ledgers, but only as time allows. The earliest volumes contain hundreds of yellowed pages covered front and back with rows of handwritten numbers.

It can take Davidson several hours to locate a specific serial number, if he can find it at all. Even then, there may be four other guitars—of all different models—with the same number sequence.

This resulted in the so-called lawsuit period. During this period, Ibanez produced guitars under the Mann name to avoid authorities in the United States and Canada. The company has produced its own guitar designs ever since. The late s and early s were an important period for the Ibanez brand. Most Ibanez guitars were made by the FujiGen guitar factory in Japan up until the mid- to late s, and from then on Ibanez guitars have also been made in other Asian countries such as Korea, China, and Indonesia.

Cimar and Starfield were guitar and bass brands owned by Hoshino Gakki. In the s, Hoshino Gakki and Kanda Shokai shared some guitar designs, and so some Ibanez and Greco guitars have the same features. The Greco versions were sold in Japan and the Ibanez versions were sold outside Japan.

Spanish stele of a boy with a pandura. The earliest image showing a lute-like instrument came from Mesopotamia prior to BC. Under the Sasanians, a short almond shaped lute from Bactria came to be called the barbat or barbud, which was developed into the later Islamic world’s oud or ud. During the 8th and 9th centuries, many musicians and artists from across the Islamic world flocked to Iberia.

The squiggly lines on the soundboard, looking like a 3 or W, are characteristic of ouds. The pandura , a lute the Romans brought to Spain, was also strung with three strings, and later called trichordon by musicologists. The instrument is strung with four courses of two strings, just as most mandolins are strung today. Beside the introduction of the lute to Spain Andalusia by the Moors, another important point of transfer of the lute from Arabian to European culture was Sicily , where it was brought either by Byzantine or later by Muslim musicians.

European lute beginnings[ edit ] A distinct European tradition of lute development is noticeable in pictures and sculpture from the 13th century onward. As early as the beginning of the 14th century, strings were doubled into courses on the miniature lute or gittern , used throughout Europe. The small zigzag-shaped soundhole[ citation needed ] became a round soundhole covered with a decoration.

The mandore , appeared in the late 16th century and although known here under a French name, was used elsewhere as indicated by the names in other European languages German mandoer, Spanish vandola, and Italian mandola.

In this lesson we are going to review by going over two of the tunes you already know, Cripple Creek, and Fireball Mail, both based on the playing of bluegrass pioneer Earl Scruggs. Both Scruggs recordings are from the classic Foggy Mountain Banjo album, recorded on Columbia- which apparently is back in print, and available from Amazon. The next three Cripple Creek MP3 examples are all fiddle recordings. The lead fiddler is probably Clayton McMichen, and the singer is Riley Puckett, who had already achieved prominence as the first country music singing star.

A very nice “Small Pot” banjo-mandolin of the type popular in the late ‘s and early ‘s. While many of these were built on cheap spunover rims, this Weymann is beautifully crafted with a 5-ply maple rim, solid maple neck and dowel, bone nut and thick ebony fingerboard with small pearl dots, and original bar frets. Enclosed mandolin-style metal button tuners, and standard heavy Weymann hoop and hardware.

The dowel stick is very short and does not bear the usual Weymann style or serial numbers; these are marked on the top of the headstock. The elaborate neck adjusting brace is stamped with the patent number granted to Weymann around This is as high-quality an example of this particular type of instrument as one is likely to find, and a very nice playing and sounding little instrument. Very clean original condition, with no repairs or major wear.

All original components except bridge and possibly tailpiece, which is a 20’s style covered “Grover PAT. Set up with a vintage skin head marked “Three Star Quality”; plays fine. Item This item has been sold.

Tweet on Twitter When John Dopyera stormed out of the National shop in January , his resignation stemmed from more than a spur-of-the-moment tantrum. For months, the inventor of the resonator guitar spent his evenings and weekends working with his brother, Rudy, on a secret project — a single-cone guitar they believed superior to the National Triolian.

They called their new instrument the Dobro. John Dopyera developed the biscuit-bridge system for use in a ukulele, but felt the design did not sustain well enough when enlarged for a guitar. Beauchamp and Dopyera had been rubbing each other the wrong way for some time, and this came as the last straw. John and his brothers decided to split from National. The Dopyeras turned the resonator upside-down and modified its V shape into a W, connected to the bridge by a long screw through the center.

A radiating spider carried the sound from the bridge to the edges of the cone. Without a block of wood choking it, the inverted resonator vibrated freely and sustained notes longer than the biscuit-bridge cone. The brothers named their new company Dobro a shortened version of Dopyera Brothers.
